The Consequences of a BRCA Mutation in Women
نویسندگان
چکیده
Deleterious mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the only known causes of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome. These mutations account for 60% of hereditary breast cancer. Women with HBOC face many decision-making challenges and rely heavily on information and guidance provided by their oncology care providers. Therefore it is imperative that advanced practitioners (APs) in oncology be informed about the many facets surrounding HBOC. The purpose of this article to provide APs with a clinical overview and the most up-to-date information regarding risk assessment for these genetic mutations, genetic testing, psychological consequences associated with genetic testing, the importance of preand posttest counseling, and posttest risk-reduction strategies.

متن کاملMutation Screening of BRCA Genes in 10 Iranian Males with Breast Cancer
Male breast cancer is a rare disease with an increasing trend. Due to limited information especially about the genetic basis of the disease in Iran and the lower age of its onset, the disease requires more attention. The aim of this study was to screen the male patients with breast cancer for BRCA mutations as well as tissue markers of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human e...
متن کاملReasons for Prophylactic Mastectomy in Women Carrying BRCA 1/2 Mutation: A Systematic Literature Review
Although the majority of breast cancers are sporadic, it is estimated that between 5% and 10% of cases are hereditary and mostly associated with BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 mutations. Women with BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 mutation present up to 95% increased risk of breast cancer and are advised to take preventive measures. Surveillance, chemoprevention and prophylactic surgery (mastectomy and oophorectomy) are ri...
متن کاملRole of genetic testing for screening and prevention for ovarian cancer: comment on "Risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy and ovarian cancer screening in 1077 women after BRCA testing".
BACKGROUND For women at potentially increased risk for ovarian cancer, data regarding screening and risk reduction are limited. Previous studies have reported on the behaviors of BRCA mutation carriers, but less is known about the behaviors of non- BRCA carriers. We surveyed a large cohort of women after BRCA testing to identify the prevalence and posttest predictors of risk-reducing and screen...
متن کاملPredictors of BRCA1/2 genetic testing among Black women with breast cancer: a population‐based study
Evidence shows that Black women diagnosed with breast cancer are substantially less likely to undergo BRCA testing and other multipanel genetic testing compared to White women, despite having a higher incidence of early-age onset breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Our study identifies predictors of BRCA testing among Black women treated for breast cancer and examines differ...
متن کاملRisk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy: a meta-analysis on impact on ovarian cancer risk and all cause mortality in BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 mutation carriers
BACKGROUND Women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers are at substantially elevated risk of developing ovarian cancer. The aim of the meta-analysis is to clarify the role of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) to reduce ovarian cancer risk and mortality in women with BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 mutation carriers. METHODS Pubmed, Medline and Scopus were searched to select English-language artic...
